35 years ago I was in this wonderful place, as a volunteer for two consecutive summers, my experience was wonderful, the first year I was welcomed by Mr. Jons and the second by Mr. Bets, wonderful people who did a great job for the Protestant community. This experience was a privilege and also the place is beautiful, highly recommended, and the surroundings are also worth visiting.
Thank you very much for the experience.
Gorgeous grounds
Lovely people
Friendly service
This a great place for a retreat or a conference.
The orangery cafe restaurant is particularly nice.
I had my favourite coffee and walnut cake with a smooth flat white.
Lovely
I was there for the 'Filling Station' worship event held every second Monday of the month. It was the first time for me and it was brilliant. Homemade cakes tea and coffee beforehand and then wonderful worship with a 5 piece band and a great speaker who was interesting and gifted. A very friendly and welcoming atmosphere; I shall go again.
This is my second visit to the Orangery. The food is lovely, the service appalling. This is a classic case of no or poor management. EVERY table, inside and out was full of used crockery and cutlery. Not one table had been cleared or wiped. It looked awful and most off putting. When it was pointed out the response was 'we will do it when we're not busy'! That's exactly the time when tables should be cleared. Staff came out with food but returned to the kitchen empty handed. First rule of a restaurant, never return to the kitchen empty handed. Staff pleasant but need direction. Also, it was not clear how to order. The gentleman before had been standing at the counter for 20 minutes and all the staff had had their backs to him and ignored him. That's just plain rude. When we were served with our food, there was still no attempt to clean the table. We had to ask. Please get someone in charge who can run this place properly. It may be staffed by amateur volunteers but they could still act more professionally.
What a beautiful place, returning to spend the weekend with church family. The grounds are as lovely and peaceful as ever. The main areas have Ben nicely refurbished to a high standard and all the food was top notch with an impressive range of cuisines. The period meeting rooms and library gave us ample space. Highly recommended.
I have stayed at Ashburnham Place many times as my church has been holding its annual retreat event there every August since 1992.
Ashburnham Place strikes me as the perfect venue for setting time apart from our busy everyday lives, because it has been consecrated to God as a place where He may be glorified.
Everybody, no matter what they believe or not, is made very welcome by the staff and the international volunteers.
Whilst I do not expect the extravagance of a 3 or 4 or 5 star hotel during a Christian retreat week, I have always enjoyed the warm hospitality, the clean accommodation and the lovely - partly homegrown - food.
The stunning surroundings see me venture out on early morning rambles, which makes for a perfect start into the day.
I am already looking forward to my next stay this August.
My year would not be the same without my holiday at this very special place.
Great coffee and freshly made bread from the Orangery Café. Lovely walk around the lake.
I booked a baby shower here for my daughter in law. They gave us the loveliest room, the library. Everything was perfect despite them being closed to the public for refurbishment. They honoured our very large booking because I think they knew I wouldn’t find another place at short notice. Eve the receptionist and the team of waitresses that served us were so kind and thoughtful. Nothing was too much trouble. I go out to a lot of coffee shops and restaurants but I really was so impressed with the staff. Infact the whole place is beautiful!
